Treat it Queer UM Training Series - 2SLGBTQIA+ Sexual Health
2SLGBTQIA+ Sexual Health
Stéphane Aubin & Dr. Flori Sintenie
So. You want to talk about sex. Specifically, you want to talk about LGBT sex. You might have questions like, what’s PrEP, and how does it relate to HIV? Why is lesbian sex barely ever talked about in medical settings? How can you contract Hepatitis C, or get rid of it? What’s the deal with ‘chems’ and what do they have to do with sex? Let’s find out about all that (and more!) in this interactive workshop! This is the time to ask everything you didn’t dare to ask before. Both people with and without prior knowledge are very welcome to join.
Note: the displayed time is EST (Canada). For European participants, the event takes place from 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM CEST (+2).

Treat it Queer UM Training Series - 2SLGBTQIA+ Mental Health
2SLGBTQIA+ Mental Health
Stéphane Aubin
Did you know that LGBTQ+ youth are more than twice as likely to experience suicidal ideation than heterosexual youth? Did you know that one-in-five transgender youth has made a suicide attempt? Did you know that one-in-three LGBTQ+ adults experiences mental illness, compared to one-in-five heterosexual adults, and that their symptoms are more severe? What about LGBTQ+ refugees? In what ways can their journeys shape their mental health?
The experience of mental illness by LGBTQ+ folks is unique due to their lived experience and the social contexts in which they live, work, and play. In this workshop we will examine mental health through an LGBTQ+ lense, to better understand the reality of mental illness as it affects queer people and challenge some misconceptions or preconceived ideas we may hold about mental health itself.
Note: the displayed time is EST (Canada). For European participants, the event takes place from 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM CEST (+2).

Treat it Queer UM Training Series - Intersectional Approaches to Health Research
Intersectional Approaches to Health Research
Dr. Maddalena Giacomozzi
Intersectionality is something we all care about, but how to apply this to health research? How to take different identities of the study population into consideration? And even more so, how to analyze these variables simultaneously? Dr. Giacomozzi will present to us their research on obstetric violence and indigenous birth positions to illustrate an example of how intersectionality can be an effective research method. Building on Mullings and Schulz’s scholarship, they will illustrate an innovative framework that highlights how gender, race and class are mutually constructed and interdependent. The times when health disparities were seen as the result of only one form of discrimination are long passed, and understanding how and why different identities intersect is necessary to conduct impactful research.
Note: the displayed time is EST (Canada). For European participants, the event takes place from 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM CEST (+2).

Treat it Queer UM Training Series - Non-White: QTBIPOC Health
Non-White: QTBIPOC Health
Ellie Reyes
Queer and trans people of colour experience barriers to accessing healthcare. In this workshop, participants will learn about how medical racism intersects with homophobia and transphobia in healthcare. We will explore unconscious bias, privilege and power, and learn tools to see our patients through an intersectional lens.
Note: the displayed time is EST (Canada). For European participants, the event takes place from 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM CEST (+2).

Treat it Queer UM Training Series - Gender-Affirmative Care
Gender-Affirmative Care
Aafke Uilhoorn & Dr. Flori Sintenie
What does gender-affirmative care stand for? How can medical care help individuals to affirm their genders? How does enrollment in a "gender clinic" work? Or what different aspects of healthcare are involved in this category of care? In this workshop we will dive into different facets of gender-affirming care, including hormonal therapies, surgeries and more. We will provide some historical context, explain how gender-affirmative care is currently implemented in the Netherlands, and what the current opportunities and challenges are.
Note: the displayed time is EST (Canada). For European participants, the event takes place from 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM CEST (+2).

Treat it Queer UM Training Series - Inclusive Approaches in Language and Communication
Inclusive Approaches in Language and Communication
Aafke Uilhoorn & Dr. Flori Sintenie
Adequate communication is one of the core skills a healthcare professional needs to master. Sensitive language use is an important factor for this. As language is constantly evolving, it is important to integrate language changes in our lexicon to communicate inclusively with patients and co-workers. Currently, a great amount of questions are placed when it comes to societies’ beliefs on gender and sexuality.
For example: how can we incorporate these ‘new’ social realities and identities in the language we use? How can we bring about change that is bigger than ourselves? Why is this important? And how do we know if we’ve asked too much, or too little? In this workshop we will be answering all these questions. We will discuss inclusive communication, explain strategies on how to address a broad range of different identities, and discuss ways of creating a safe(r) setting for sharing sensitive health information.

Treat it Queer UM Training Series - Beyond the Gender Binary
Beyond the gender binary: exploring gender identities and why they matter in health
Dr. Maddalena Giacomozzi
During this training we will explore how (human) biological complexity expands beyond the female/male binary. Do you know that 1 in 40 people has an intersex condition, and that many animal species can change sex during their lives? Any ideas why they call spotted hyenas "the trans princess of the animal kingdom"?
In this first workshop we will take a critical look at the concepts of gender, sex, and sexual orientation, and their implications for health. Do these really matter? By discussing our own experiences and assumptions, we will explore new tools to become more inclusive health care providers for all patients.

Lecture: "Gender diversity and healthcare"
Maddalena Giacomozzi presents their lecture “Gender diversity and healthcare” to students of the Maastricht University BSc course “Gender Diversity and Medicine”.
