Treat it Queer UM Training Series - Beyond the Gender Binary

Beyond the gender binary: exploring gender identities and why they matter in health

Dr. Maddalena Giacomozzi

During this training we will explore how (human) biological complexity expands beyond the female/male binary. Do you know that 1 in 40 people has an intersex condition, and that many animal species can change sex during their lives? Any ideas why they call spotted hyenas "the trans princess of the animal kingdom"?
In this first workshop we will take a critical look at the concepts of gender, sex, and sexual orientation, and their implications for health. Do these really matter? By discussing our own experiences and assumptions, we will explore new tools to become more inclusive health care providers for all patients.
