Queer postcards: a slow travel story is a Treat it Queer project aiming to re-center the experiences of trans and gender diverse people living with chronic illness, disability, and neurodivergence in the current gender and climate crisis.
Via green travel, we wanted to highlight its intersection with ability status, exposing barriers — but also resilience. Alongside local communities, we explored contextual spaces for our collective care. We used Photovoice to discover and reveal local landmarks and community practices in active resistance to the actors and factors contributing to the gender and climate crisis.
Travel was slow-tempoed, in direct contrast to modern fast travel trends. A limited quantity of the postcards included in this project have been printed in sustainable risograph, which uses soy- and water-based inks — avoiding environmentally dangerous waste and gluttonous energy consumption.
Through the grassroots framework of photovoice, this project reveals a geography of local groups, collective care, and resistance strategies, the sum of which empower communities in their capacity and networks.
Now, you too can experience the wonders of this travel, from the comfort of your home.
Download the postcard collection as an electronic keepsake, or print it using the method of your choice for a unique memento of queer stories and voices. Perhaps you can even use them as intended, spreading these memories around the globe.
