The term queer requires particular attention and explanation, as it comes burdened with interesting considerations, due to the past and current debates surrounding its understood meanings and usage.
Historically speaking, the Western world has used queer as a slur to demean, disparage, and deride 2SLGBTQIA+ people. However, in recent decades, a reclamation of the term has occurred within the spheres of queer theory and activism, such that now, queer is often used by activists, scholars, and advocates as an umbrella term for any non-cisheteronormative identity, thereby rebranding queer as a positive and affirming identity label.
